About Dyslexia

What dyslexia actually is - the current definition used by SASC - and the signs to look out for in primary-aged and older pupils.

Is this your child?

Bright, curious but struggling with reading, spelling or writing?

Many parents have a similar story: their child is clearly able, yet finds reading, spelling or writing unexpectedly hard. Common signs include:

  • Reading slowly, or avoiding reading aloud
  • Spelling the same word differently on the same page
  • Written work that doesn't reflect their spoken ideas
  • Tiring quickly, or losing confidence, with literacy tasks

Recognising the signs is the first step. Rowena can help you take the next one, whether that's a conversation, a screening, or a full diagnostic assessment.

The journey

What happens when you get in touch

A conversation, not a form

Every enquiry starts with a friendly, no-obligation chat about your concerns and what you're hoping to find out.

Getting the full picture

Short questionnaires for home and school help build a picture of the learner's strengths, difficulties and history.

The assessment or screening

A calm, carefully paced session using nationally standardised tests. Most learners find it far more enjoyable than they expected - some even call it a treat.

Report and feedback

A clear report followed by a feedback conversation - and, where helpful, Rowena will liaise directly with the learner's school.

Designed to be read. This website uses the Lexend typeface, generous spacing and short lines - evidence-informed choices that make reading easier, especially for dyslexic readers. The same care goes into every report Learnability writes.

What families say

Rowena has been fantastic. I could not recommend her more highly. She has been hugely supportive and made the whole dyslexia assessment process for my son clear and simple, as well as proactively engaging his school with the results. I was impressed by how much she 'got' our son… As a bonus, our son thoroughly enjoyed his time with Rowena and thought it was a treat to be assessed.

Mrs A S

Rowena has helped my daughter immensely in just one academic year. Her sensitive approach and skilled learning techniques have really made a difference in building her confidence… I am so happy that we have found someone who has the skills, patience and persistence… and cannot recommend her more highly.

Mrs K L

Both my son (12 yrs) and daughter (10 yrs) have seen Rowena and she has been a huge help to them… The children really enjoy going to see her and I always find her experience invaluable. She is professional and approachable.

Mrs C L

Rowena assessed our son as he was falling behind at school. She was very thorough and her report included some excellent recommendations for school and for us to use at home too… She is clearly very knowledgeable about dyslexia and we are pleased that we came to her.

Mr S S

From our very first conversation, Rowena was warm, knowledgeable and reassuring. She took the time to explain every stage of the assessment process and immediately put both us and our daughter at ease. The report was exceptionally thorough and written in a way that was easy to understand, with practical recommendations that her school could implement straight away. We finally have clarity about our daughter's strengths and challenges, and we couldn't be more grateful.

Mrs G H

I was amazed at how quickly Rowena built such a positive relationship with our son. He is usually anxious around testing, but he came home saying he'd actually enjoyed the assessment and felt that someone had really understood him. The assessment has been invaluable in helping us secure the support he needs at school. Rowena's expertise and genuine care shine through in everything she does.

Mrs L-A-S

Choosing Rowena was one of the best decisions we've made. Her extensive experience and knowledge about dyslexia were immediately obvious. She was incredibly professional, yet approachable and her recommendations have made a real difference both at school and at home. She also liaised with the school when needed, making the whole process seamless. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend her.

Ms F R

After months of worrying that our child was struggling but not knowing why, Rowena gave us answers. Her assessment was detailed, balanced and focused just as much on our son's strengths as his difficulties. She explained everything clearly and gave us practical strategies we could start using immediately. We left feeling informed, supported and optimistic about the future.
